A series of bombings in Chinatown leads Nicholas Kang, an uncompromising Los Angeles police officer, into the Elite Operations Division. Further investigation reveals it may be connected to the disappearance of his father, a police officer, twenty years earlier. In the game, players can explore an area covering 240 square miles (622 square kilometers). The game features accurate reproductions of street names, landmarks and highways throughout Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and other parts of Los Angeles. Mixed to positive reviews were received for True Crime. Critics criticized poor graphics, poor gameplay, and an unlikable protagonist. Despite this, many critics praised this game because of its ambition, the differences between it and Grand Theft Auto III, the branching storyline system, and the overall 'feel'. In 2005, True Crime: New York City for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube launched, continuing the franchise's commercial success.
